Why Should We Wear Seat Belts?

By Eric B.

After years and years of hearing "put your seat belt on" simply just makes you not want to put on your seat belt, right. Well No, you should always put on your seat belt not just for your safety, but because it is the law!

The purpose of wearing your seat belt is to keep you from hitting the dashboard or flying through the windshield in the event of a crash. The reason why you would Flying through a windshield or hitting the dashboard is due to inertia, which means an object continuous to move at its current velocity, until a force causes it to change. So there is some science behind wearing your seat belt. Also seat belts are made to lock up when in an accident and the seat belt webbing is made of flexible material, which will give a little so your stop isn't so sudden. Though the seat belt is only made to be worn correctly: with the lap belt just above our wast and the arm belt crossing your body. This is because those parts of your body can withstand the crash forces better than other parts of your body.

The laws behind wearing your seat belt is very complicated. It varys in each state and has specific rules for front seats, rear seats and  even if you made a traffic violation. So there are two categories for seat belt laws, Primary and Secondary. With a primary law a law enforcement officer can ticket a driver or passenger for not wearing a seat belt. The secondary seat belt laws state that law enforcement officers may issue a ticket for not wearing a seat belt, only when there is another cite-able traffic infraction. So basically if you don't exactly know what the law is for your state, just to be safe, in both was with the law and your safety, wear your seat belt.Wearing your seat belt will reduce the risk of crash injury by 50%. And remember click it or ticket!

I like this post a lot because I feel wearing a seatbelt is extremely important. I know a few people who have lost their lives in car accidents that they could've made it through had they just been wearing their seatbelt. This topic is very important to me, and you did a great job in your post about it.
