Automotive Design: Style and Design

By: Nick H.

For years, automotive design has struggled with the balance of designing a car with both style and design. Style constitutes  the way a car looks, the way it feels, and the way that people see it and are drawn to it. Design is based more on the statistics that the car can provide. Design includes how the car is built so that it may produce its top speed, acceleration, handling, and and overall feel of driving.

Take the new Ford GT for example. Traditionally, the Ford GT was a lower budget sports car, compared to those higher ends cars coming from Italy and other parts of Europe. With the new model, priced at nearly $450,000, Ford has raised the stakes on both the style and design of the vehicle.

Style:
Ford captivates its audience at a glance with the sleek new design of the Ford GT. To begin, Ford bases the design of the taillights on the iconic Ferrari F12. Ferrari is known for the circular taillights on its F12 and other models. Having a low to the ground profile, the car immediately gives the impression that it is a sport vehicle, built for both speed and control. Having only 2 doors continues the sporty feel, and gives a "not meant for children" aspect to it. Having large exhaust pipes centered at the back of the car gives customers an idea that this car has a large engine, and therefore needs large exhaust pipes.

Design:
With a top speed of 209 MPH and a 0-60 MPH time of 2.8 seconds, the Ford GT clearly does not lack in the design side of things. Many factors go into design. Mainly, design is focused on making a light body frame, a light (yet powerful) engine, having aerodynamics to cut wind resistance, and making the most efficient use of the power that is created by the engine. All of  these factors came into effect when designing the Ford GT, and each is done to perfection to create this work of art.

Both customers and businesses alike will try to decide which is more important, style or design. However, many will conclude that style without design, or vice versa, is nothing. A good looking sport car is nothing without performance. Similarly, a speedy vehicle will not sell if it is not appealing to look at. The Ford GT does an excellent job of providing both of these two things in one vehicle.
