Electric Vehicles: Competing With Sport Cars

By: Nick H.

When asked what people think of electric vehicles, visions of a small, weak vehicle come to mind. With gas being so expensive, many more people are considering switching to an electric vehicle. Lexus is trying to overcome the stereotypes surrounding electric vehicles, with its new LC 500h. The LC 500h is a hybrid electric sport vehicle, capable of reaching 354 horsepower.

As shown to the right, the LC 500h is not what many would think an electric vehicle would look like. However, the exterior is not what is most impressive about the vehicle: The energy saving technology is what sets this car apart from many others on the road. For example, energy used by the brakes when stopping the vehicle is saved and reused later to help accelerate the car.

There are various things that this car does to go above and beyond as a sport vehicle. To begin, the car has a fixed gear system that "lets drivers feel the power delivery from the throttle more directly" (Cunningham, 1). Also, various driving modes are available for differently tuned throttle, transmission,  steering, and suspension. The Lexus LC 500h will be available for purchase in 2018.
